So, I had this question posted on my MOPS group site and I thought I share my response, 2 cents and snippets of my experience on this matter here as well as I found it extremely uncomfortable and discouraging to nurse after baby Arsam gained his first chompers at 6 months. I asked my mom and she said it happened to her as well but all her kids figured it out and kept nursing long after that point too. Keep at it nursing mamas and I'll promise you, if they figured it out as new borns, they'll figure it out this time too! ;)
"Nursing mommy's; my 8 month old is a very aggressive nurser and since he now has teeth, I am so sore, it brings me to tears to nurse. (maybe TMI, but I have sores from the constant rubbing of top teeth). I have tried positioning him differently and it doesn't seem to help. I don't want to stop nursing. Thought about just pumping and feeding by bottle, but he refuses to take one (I am hoping I don't have to go that route). Just chews on any artificial nipple, including pacifiers. Any suggestions? Not sure if a lactation consultant can help his nursing technique. Thoughts?"
I had that issue when my son was about 6 months old nursing (6 months ago). This also happened more when the breasts were somewhat empty and soft. They are adjusting to those teeth. But remember, a nursing baby can never bite and nurse at the same time! If he nurses, then he keeps going without biting. He is probably playing around when he is full and not needing to nurse any longer. I agree with Megan. Just keep at it and give him a strong NO don't do that and stop the nursing, keep him away, and you'll see he will get the point soon! Good luck!
