So the summer 2015 is winding down and I am in a big adrenaline rush to check off as many items on our summer to do list as possible. Arah has been begging for baking with me for a long time and truth be told, though I enjoy cooking with her around me and she has helped with lots of things from Lasagna layering to making pizza dough and assembling it, I am not a big fan of baking. shhh! I would eat a Napoleon treat or puff pastry here and there socially but the idea of close measurement, and whipping eggs doesn't exactly appeal to me all for just a cake plus all the unnecessary sugar that will be gobbled up by the already active kids and ehem... myself. DREADFUL! But ya know, it's summer and kids want to have fun so I decided to swallow the bullet and just go with it. So here is how she became my little pastry chef connoisseur for the day:
It was actually a great time and Arah was super pumped about well... most of the process. I guess she didn't anticipate all the exact measuring, and buttering up the pans and the mixings! Her little hands would get tired so quickly and she wanted to squish the fluffed up egg whites like bath time bubbles and add much more vanilla extract than what the recipe calls for because it smelled 'sooo good'! Gulp...
She was extra happy to eat for sure though! Our walnut cup cake from Roza Montazemi cook book didn't exactly smell like what my mom baked for us back home when we were kids, but after all I believe it was a worthwhile experience to be spending mommy-daughter time together on a project in the kitchen and appreciate all that goes in the cooking department for 'food with Love' by moms. Not to mention a practical way to apply the grams, fractions, tbsp, tsp and all those good fine motor skills that they do and will have done in math and practical life lessons for years to come.
Bon Appetite!
