Virtually every awards group that already had been handed out its honors this year had lined up behind A Separation( Jodaee Nader az Simin) from Iran for the best foreign language film , so it wasn't so unexpected for me to see it win yet another time for the Oscars tonight. However, I could still not resist the running of tears of joy down my face as I was seeing the footage and the Speech * by the legendary director and screen play writer Asghar Farhadi in Kodak Theatre tonight. It felt like Iranian soccer film had won the world cup or like for me.
A Seperation nominated along side movies from Belgium, Canada, Israel and Poland, about people struggling to communicate with one another, makes Iranians and especially Iranian society more accessible and comprehensible than anything else seen before in these trying, dark, and seperating times but I believe the reason for it to make it all the way to here is its Universal language of human relationships. The way Farhadi peels back layer after layer of the story and with them reveals insights into the characters and the social fabric, in a compelling, dense, and morally challenging story is masterful. A separation according to critics has the weight of a completely achieved work.
Tonight we saw how a separation united us...

*"At this time, many Iranians all over the world are watching us and I imagine them to be very happy," director Farhadi said while accepting the Oscar.
"At a time of talk of war, intimidation and aggression is exchanged between politicians, the name of their county, Iran, is spoken here through her glorious culture, a rich and ancient culture that has been hidden under the heavy dust of politics."
"I proudly offer this award to the people of my country, the people who respect all cultures and civilizations and despise hostility and resentment," he added.
